Sonography Q & A

What is sonography?

Sonography is a painless diagnostic test that provides valuable information about your health and body. Through the use of sound wave technology, sonography has the ability to generate images of your internal organs or baby, that your doctor can view on a video screen.

The team at Capital Women’s Care may recommend sonography to diagnose gynecological issues or evaluate the growing baby in your belly. The team may also use sonography to act as a visual guide for a test, such as an amniocentesis.

There are two common types of sonography:

Transabdominal sonography

During transabdominal sonography, the ultrasound wand is placed on your abdomen to generate images. A gel is placed on your abdomen to help improve the gliding of the wand.

Transvaginal sonography

During a transvaginal sonogram, your practitioner places the ultrasound wand in your vagina.

Your OB/GYN determines the type of sonography you need.

When can I expect sonography during pregnancy?

Your sonography is one of the most enjoyable tests during your pregnancy because you get to “see” your baby. Your OB/GYN at Capital Women’s Care determines when and how often you need sonography during your pregnancy, but you can expect at least one test at 20 weeks gestation.

During sonography, our highly trained Sonographer evaluates your baby, amniotic sac, placenta, and ovaries.

You may also have sonography performed earlier than 20 weeks to confirm pregnancy and estimate your due date, as well as one later to assess the health and positioning of your baby for delivery.

Why would I need sonography if I am not pregnant?

Your OB/GYN at Capital Women’s Care may recommend a sonography exam to confirm or rule out a gynecological health condition. Your sonography may be used to look for:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Fibroids
  • Reproductive organ abnormalities
  • Placement of an intrauterine device
  • Ectopic pregnancy

You may also benefit from sonography to identify what may be the underlying cause of your gynecological symptoms, such as pelvic pain or heavy bleeding.

Sonography is a noninvasive, safe, and painless test that provides your OB/GYN at Capital Women’s Care valuable information about your health or pregnancy. To learn more about the test, call the office today.
