Postpartum Q & A

How can you have the best postpartum experience possible?

After having a baby, your body goes through both physical and emotional changes and challenges. To help you have the best postpartum experience possible, the team at Capital Women’s Care - Bethesda recommends:

  • Getting lots of rest
  • Abstaining from sexual intercourse for 4-6 weeks
  • Using your support system
  • Following your doctor’s orders
  • Contacting your doctor if you have any unusual or concerning thoughts, feelings, or emotions

What should you expect postpartum?

After you have a baby, whether it was a vaginal delivery or by C section, your body and genitals may be sore and stiff. Your legs and feet may swell, and you may have cramping. Postpartum bleeding is often heavy right after delivery. That's normal and should lessen as the days pass.

Often, new mothers experience leaking breasts, even if they’re not breastfeeding. Your breasts may feel extra heavy, full, or tender. If you are breastfeeding, you may notice that your nipples become sore for the first few days as they become used to nursing.

You may also be overwhelmed with emotions. You may feel excited and scared at the same time. That's normal. If you start feeling sad, disconnected, or have thoughts of hurting yourself or your baby, call your OB/GYN immediately.

What should you expect at your postpartum checkup?

Your OB/GYN at Capital Women’s Care - Bethesda schedules a postpartum checkup 4-6 weeks after your delivery. During this appointment, your doctor does a physical examination and asks about how you’re adapting to motherhood. The postpartum appointment is an important one, as it allows your doctor to ensure you’re healing physically and emotionally.

During this appointment, your doctor may discuss:

  • Birth control options
  • Infant care and feeding
  • Your sleep habits
  • Exercise
  • Resuming sexual activity
  • Postpartum depression
  • Any problems that occurred during or after labor and delivery

If you have any questions or concerns, address them with your OB/GYN during this appointment.
