Endometrial ablation is a procedure that destroys the innermost layer of your uterine lining. This procedure reduces the amount of blood you shed through menstruation and breakthrough bleeding.
Each month when you have your period, your body sheds the endometrium (the lining of your uterus). This tissue normally grows throughout your monthly cycle, but in some women, it grows too much, resulting in heavy cycles that last for longer than a week or occur more frequently than every 28 days.
In endometrial ablation, the endometrium is destroyed, either significantly reducing your period or completely stopping it.
Your gynecologist may recommend an endometrial ablation if you experience bleeding heavy enough to interfere in your daily life. If you have heavy periods that require you to change your tampon or pad every hour or cause you to bleed through regularly, endometrial ablation can help.
Your gynecologist may also suggest an endometrial ablation if your periods last longer than a week or occur more than every 28 days. Since this procedure reduces the amount of blood you regularly lose, your doctor may also recommend it if you’re anemic (have a low red blood cell count).
Endometrial ablations aren’t right for everyone. If you may want to become pregnant in the future, you should not have the procedure. Endometrial ablations make pregnancy significantly less likely. If you do become pregnant, the procedure increases the risk of miscarriage.
If you suffer from any of the following conditions or have recently been pregnant, you shouldn’t have the procedure:
